I really love this print! This beautiful botanical was taken using a bear's breeches leaf, found in my own backyard, on a gelatin printing plate . I really love how much detail was printed, all the veins and folds of the leaf. This is a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork.

The process of using a gelli or gelatin plate, is also called mono printing. Mono meaning only one print of an image is printed with each inking of the plate. Unlike linocuts, where you print an edition of multiples of the same image, there is only one print with gel printing.

A thin layer of acrylic paint is rolled out on a plate of gelatin, and the bear's breeches leaf was placed on top of the wet paint. Paper placed over the top was lightly pressed, and the paper peeled back, revealing the botanical image. Then... three layers of shiny metallic gold acrylic paint was painted giving it a very rich background.

I did a post on my blog with more details and photos about gelli printing. You can see that here:

*Size: The image size is approx. 8"x9.5." It was then adhered to a 10"x14" sheet of light tan Stonehenge printing paper with one deckle edge on the bottom.

***This collage is so much prettier in person than my photos could ever capture. Gold metallic paint is difficult to photograph. Depending on how the light shines on it, it can look anywhere from a bright yellow gold to a dull brownish gold. I tried to capture the gold in the collages as best as I could. But know, these collages look so much prettier in person than I was able to capture in my photos.

*All materials used for this collage are acid free and archival.

*Framing Suggestion: I would suggest having an acid free mat cut for this artwork. Acid free mat board will keep the paper from yellowing with age. The mat will keep the collage away from the glass, just in case moisture gets inside the frame. And always, the best way to protect any original art piece is to be sure to not hang it in direct sunlight or close to a bright lamp which will age and fade the artwork.
