Rose Swirl (#1) - Watercolor

Back before I was a linocut printmaker, I was a watercolor artist. I painted for many, many, many, many years. One of my favorite subject matters was flowers.

A creamy pale yellow rose with hints of lavender is painted against a very pale yellow background with gold metallic foil swirls. The gold is an imitation gold leaf and it is very shiny and difficult to photograph. If you look through the photos you will see areas where the gold looks more shiny in some areas of the painting than in other areas. It all depends on where my spotlight was focused. In reality the gold looks the same throughout the painting.

One of my favorite artists of all times is Gustav Klimt. Quite often Gustav used metallic gold and swirly designs in particular in his paintings. That was the inspiration for the background of these watercolors.

*This watercolor was painted on 300lb. Arches watercolor paper with Winsor Newton watercolors. Winsor and Newton watercolors are the finest watercolors available.

The last two photos are of my painting, Rose Swirl (#2). These two paintings would make a lovely set together.

*Framing Suggestion: I would suggest having an acid free mat cut for the watercolor. Acid free mat board will keep the paper from yellowing with age. The mat will keep the painting away from the glass, just in case moisture gets inside the frame. And always, the best way to protect any original art piece is to be sure to not hang it in direct sunlight or close to a bright lamp which will age and fade the artwork.
